Modeling of a Negative Refractive Index Metamaterial Unit-Cell and Array for Aircraft Surveillance Applications

In this paper, a unique negative refractive index-metamaterial (NRI-MTM) structure is proposed for traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) aircraft application. The NRI-MTM unit-cell combination of square circular split ring structures. metamaterial (SCM) designed on the top 1.6 mm thick FR-4 substrate, with single bottom substrate. total dimension SCM 23 × 23mm 2 (0.08? 0.08 ?), resonating at 1.06 GHz. This further used to create 5×4 array 130 111mm (0.46 ? 0.4 ?). A High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) assess electromagnetic properties Furthermore, in order analyse double (DNG) behaviour structure, rotated from 0 360 degrees step 60 along azimuthal plane. On doing so, it observed that, structures, including exhibit DNG NRI over frequency band 0.5 1.2 GHz, thus making optimum surveillance 5 4 were fabricated, measured results are well agreement simulated results. Further, as superstrate patch antenna analyze impact MTM performance. comparison without loaded has gain improvement 2.8dB bandwidth enhancement 31.5MHz.
